Food on vacation: tips to avoid getting sick abroad

The time for the big holidays has come! And who says travel says culinary discoveries. However, some precautions should be taken when going abroad to avoid falling ill. Our advice for not tasting.

More than 60% of French people take advantage of the holidays to discover local and original dishes. But so that the pleasures of taste do not turn into gastric nightmares, it is important to take some precautions, our body is not used to being exposed to certain bacteria. Discover the do's and don'ts so that your culinary choices don't play tricks on you during your stay.

Strengthen the intestinal flora before departure

Travelers with fragile intestines who are preparing to go far can take a preventive cure to strengthen the intestinal flora . The probiotic these microorganisms contained in certain yogurts, in vegetables such as carrots, beets and celery, or in the sourdough bread, will help to tone their body. Ingesting these "good" bacteria will help prevent possible infections.

Prefer bottled water... in glass if possible!

Abroad, to avoid consuming potentially contaminated water, it is better to buy only bottles and avoid tap water. Only downside: this practice is not very ecological. Be careful not to throw them anywhere and especially not in the sea  ! Recycle them as much as possible.

In restaurants, travelers must imperatively demand that the bottle be uncapped in front of them . In the majority of cases, illnesses contracted during a trip are related to water consumption. So don't forget to use bottled water to brush your teeth. Also watch out for ice cubes which can be "treacherous", since they will have been made with tap water.

Wash vegetables well and eat them peeled

While washing all the fruits and vegetables you eat away from home is essential, consider peeling them as well. Indeed,  the skin can be potentially contaminated .

Provide the appropriate first aid kit

Since you won't always have bottled water on hand, it's best to avoid effervescent medications. In addition, before resorting to conventional antidiarrheal, take green clay in your suitcase , which is very effective in cases of diarrhea. It absorbs toxins present in the digestive tract like Smecta. Another natural remedy to relieve you: vegetable charcoal. In case of vomiting or nausea, consider ginger. Cut a piece and chew it after having previously washed it with mineral water.

Avoid the raw

Foodie travelers will indulge in tasting almost everything except raw meat dishes. Cooking kills bacteria, such as salmonella or Escherichia Coli, which cause stomach aches or diarrhea. Meat should be cooked through or boiled for a long time . A concept that applies to other ingredients such as vegetables, cold cuts or even certain desserts that could be garnished with uncooked creams.

Wash your hands regularly

Before and after a meal, after going to the toilet... Hand washing must be an essential daily reflex, and even more so when traveling.
