Cystitis: natural remedies to treat this urinary tract infection

Often a source of great discomfort, cystitis affects women more than men. Under the advice of Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux, naturopath and thanks to the book "The spices which heal" by Murielle Toussaint, Bio A la Une offers you some remedies to relieve this urinary infection.

Cystitis can occur at any time of daily life. It occurs in the event of poor hydration during the day, after intercourse or in the event of an imbalance of the intestinal or vaginal flora, or even because of too tight clothing. Some women are also prone to recurrent cystitis. A situation that can quickly turn hellish.

Often the culprits are small bacteria that travel up the urethra and attach themselves to the bladder. Symptoms are characterized by an urgent urge to urinate, burning in the urethra or lower abdomen. Here are some tips for dealing with these ailments.

Stay hydrated in case of cystitis

Whether or not you have cystitis, it is important to drink at least 1.5 liters of water each day. But it is even more so in the event of a urinary tract infection. Good hydration helps stimulate filtration and the elimination of bacteria.

Think of the cranberry

Known to fight against urinary tract infections, cranberry is an ally of choice for the antioxidants it contains and helps dislodge bacteria attached to the mucous membranes. Be careful to choose it organic because the industrial juice is far too sweet.

The virtues of green tea

The green tea  is also quite effective because very diuretic, that is to say, it increases the urinary secretion.

You can also opt for a bowl of watercress to drink morning and evening, as advised by Murielle Toussaint in her book  Les épices qui healing (Ed. Mosaïque-Santé).

Choose draining plants

In the event of cystitis, it is necessary to eliminate the germs or bacteria present in the bladder, hence the importance of drinking infusions to relieve you.

There are many key anti-cystitis plants: bearberry, heather, piloselle, meadowsweet, and even hibiscus, as Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux points out. All can be taken in infusions or capsules . Small originality for the hibiscus: " you can make an infusion from its petals but not more than 5-10 minutes ", as the specialist points out, " because it infuses quickly ". Another remedy: take echinacea in capsules.

Prepare your infusion

Bring ½ liters of water to a boil in a pot of water. When the water is simmering, remove it from the heat and put the chosen plant in it. Allow about ten minutes to infuse well. For a better infusion, put a lid on the pot after putting the plants in it. Thus, the diffusion of aromas will be more effective.

Be careful not to add sugar in these decoctions because " the sugar nourishes the bacteria ", as Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux explains.

Watch your diet

When cystitis occurs, your diet should not be neglected either. Avoid foods that are too fatty and especially too sweet because bacteria love them. No sugar " recalls Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux. You have to pay attention to the body's acidity level , which is also a factor in the proliferation of bacteria. Cow's milk for example is not recommended because it is too fattening " according to the naturopath.

Stimulate your immune system

With cystitis, your body is often weakened. Do not hesitate to stimulate your body to rebuild your immune defenses.

" To stimulate your immunity, you can take propolis , grapefruit seed extract or thyme  , these are natural supplements to boost the immune system",  informs Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux, naturopath

" You can use both intestinal and vaginal probiotics ," she adds. When taking antibiotics, probiotics can restore the flora and prevent weakening of the mucous membranes following treatment.

Essential oils

Charlotte Régnier-Vigouroux advises against taking essential oils directly. It is preferable to take them in capsule because " they are very powerful ". Favor antiseptic and anti-infectious essential oils such as savory, oregano or even cinnamon .

Note: in case of pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding, essential oils are strongly discouraged.

The seeds to choose

In Murielle Toussaint's book The Spices That Heal , several seed-based remedies are proposed. If you are a fan of infusions, you can choose to take coriander seeds . Add a teaspoon of coriander seeds to a cup of water, wait for the water to simmer and steep for 10 minutes, always using a lid.

The other alternative are poppy seeds , to drink 2 to 3 times a day with a little honey .

Clearly, to overcome this urinary tract infection, the main thing is to hydrate yourself well, and to continue to pay attention to your diet. And if your symptoms persist after these grandma's recipes, don't hesitate to see a doctor.
