What options in contrast to hormonal contraception? or What alternatives to hormonal contraception?

The choice of a method of contraception is specific to each. While the majority of women use hormonal contraceptives, more and more are looking for alternative methods. What are the possibilities apart from the sacrosanct pill?

The first form of contraception that we think of is often the pill. But, many women now wish to do without hormonal contraception.

What are the benefits of non-hormonal contraception?

In recent scandals 3rd and 4th generation pills have highlighted the risks associated with the use of hormonal contraception. This increases the risk of venous thrombosis or embolism. Many French women have therefore turned to other methods of contraception: according to an INED survey in 2014, the use of the pill fell from 50% in 2010 to 41% in 2013. In addition to the risks associated with the 'use of a hormonal contraceptive, women often invoke the wish to return to a more natural cycle.

The copper IUD

The Intrauterine Device (IUD) or IUD is a plastic T around which a copper wire is wound. It is placed in the uterus by a gynecologist, surgeon or midwife. Copper blocks the passage of sperm and causes micro-inflammation of the uterine lining which prevents a possibly fertilized egg from implanting.

This method is very reliable, with a Pearl index of 0.6 to 0.8 . The copper IUD is implanted for 3 to 10 years, and can be used as an emergency contraceptive if inserted within 5 days of unsafe sex. In "short" version, it is also suitable for women who have never had children. The only downside is that it can cause heavier and more painful periods.

The condom (male or female)

A mechanical barrier to the risk of pregnancy, the condom is also and above all one of the only means of contraception that protects against STDs.

Easy to use, the male condom can be purchased in pharmacies, supermarkets or even from self-service distributors. More difficult to find, the female condom is distributed in certain pharmacies or on the Internet. The female variant looks like a large male condom, with a flexible ring at each end. To be effective, it must be inserted into the vagina and protrude so that it covers the labia minora.

If the condom is in theory very reliable, in practice, the misuse and the "accidents" decrease its effectiveness. Of condoms "bios" natural latex were introduced, to avoid allergies to chemicals and synthetic materials.

The latex diaphragm and the silicone cervical cap

Both are placed directly on the cervix, preventing the passage of sperm. The pose requires a little mastery. Diaphragm and cervical cap can be placed up to 2 hours before intercourse, and removed 8 to 24 hours after intercourse. Less effective than other means of contraception, they are usually combined with spermicides for added safety.

Natural methods: beware of unexpected pregnancies!

The "natural methods" aim to identify the fertile periods to avoid pregnancy through abstinence or periodic protection of intercourse (Ogino method, Billings method, temperature method, withdrawal...) These contraceptive methods have a failure rate raised. They are therefore recommended for those who can cope with a possible unplanned pregnancy ...
