Covid-19 vaccine: what are the contraindications?

While the compulsory vaccination of caregivers and the extension of the health pass have been announced, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran has listed the three unique situations for which the vaccine against Covid-19 is not recommended.

Summary

  • Three recognized contraindications
  • start of pregnancy
  • The vaccine possible from the start of pregnancy

During the questioning session to the government on July 20 at the National Assembly, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran declared that with the exception of three cases, " which potentially concern a few hundred French people, he does not there is no contraindication to the messenger RNA vaccine " against Covid-19.

Three recognized contraindications

Established after advice from the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM), the committee on vaccine strategy chaired by Professor Alain Fischer and the scientific council, the list of contraindications is as follows:

  • pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PIMS) , an " extremely rare "complication of Covid-19 that affects children,

  • “ Reactions like myocarditis , pericarditis and severe hepatitis requiring hospitalization and following a first injection of mRNA vaccine ”, added the Minister,

  • people allergic to polyethylene glycol (PEG 2000) , a component of mRNA vaccines. Olivier Véran affirmed that this situation " must concern about 10 cases in our country ".

The vaccine possible from the start of pregnancy

The Minister of Health specified that “ the history of allergy to an antibiotic or a bee sting” did not constitute contraindications, but also pregnancy in the first trimester. In fact, until now, vaccination was not recommended before the third trimester of pregnancy, but “ no particular risk ” could be observed in women who had received a dose in early pregnancy, especially when they did not know. even though they were pregnant.

"It is therefore on this basis that proper medical certificates can be recognized as contraindications and not on a simple medical or pharmaceutical opinion with an allergic history", Olivier Véran concluded.
