 Face creams in the eco-test: 3 popular products are "unsatisfactory"

They are supposed to provide the skin with moisture, reduce wrinkles and redness and ensure a fresh complexion. But some face creams do not deliver what they promise and even damage the skin: Öko-Test has examined creams for dry and sensitive skin. 13 products received the grade “very good” - at the same time three popular creams failed with a huge bang. These products are "unsatisfactory"!

Face creams for dry and sensitive skin should contain particularly mild ingredients and should not irritate the skin additionally. The results of Öko-Test show that this is not always the case: while some face creams were convincing, three brands received the grade “unsatisfactory”.

Öko-Test examines 20 face creams

Öko-Test examined a total of 20 face creams. The products come from drugstores, pharmacies, health food stores and supermarkets; the price range was between 2 and 22 euros. The creams were examined for their ingredients in test laboratories. The focus was on skin-irritating substances, allergens and mineral oils , which are particularly problematic for sensitive skin. In addition to the content, the environmental friendliness of the packaging was also rated.

Most of the face creams tested by Öko-Test were convincing: 13 products - all from certified natural cosmetics brands - received the rating “very good”. That means: The testers had "nothing to complain about" with the products.

Well-known brands fail in the Öko-Test

In the remaining seven face creams, however, questionable ingredients were discovered, which is reflected in the grades. Two products are only “sufficient”, one was rated “unsatisfactory” and the testers even rated three face creams as “unsatisfactory”.

All three products contain the two UV filters octocrylene and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, which are considered to be hormonally effective. Öko-Test explains that face creams for sensitive skin should generally not contain UV filters as they can irritate the skin. Skin-irritating preservatives and so-called polyethylene glycols, PEG for short , also contributed to the poor rating . These are obtained from petroleum and, among other things, ensure a smooth consistency in cosmetic products. The problem: PEGs irritate the skin, weaken the skin barrier and can trigger allergies.

The results of Öko-Test make it clear that the name of a well-known brand does not guarantee the quality of a care product. The following face creams scored "unsatisfactory":

• Bebe Gentle Care Sensitive Care , 3.55 euros

The results of Öko-Test show: People with sensitive skin should avoid these face creams and prefer to use products that are gentler on the skin or simply make a face cream themselves.
