 Beach holidays: 5 hygiene reflexes to adopt in the sand

Overcrowding, invasion of jellyfish, bacteria and fungi in the sand ... the beach does not always mean absolute cleanliness. Here are 5 tips and precautions to take for safe lounging.

The beach and its fine sand harbor many viruses, parasites and bacteria. Fortunately, most are non-pathogenic. But its quality is not subject to analyzes, unlike bathing water, it is uneven depending on the beaches of the French coast. To avoid yeast infections, skin diseases or skin irritations, it is better to adopt a few healthy habits this summer.

Avoid contact with sand  

Never lie down on the sand to reduce the risk of yeast infection and fungus. Use a beach mat or a small mattress to place your towel on it, which will need to be washed or changed very regularly.

Avoid digging with bare hands and deep in the sand, as microorganisms (fungi or parasites that live there) could get lodged under your fingernails. 

Wash regularly after contact with sand

Wash your hands often with organic hand gel, especially before picnicking. The sand can harbor pinworm or roundworm eggs carried by dogs and cats which can cause intestinal infestations that are certainly not serious, but unpleasant.

Shower as soon as possible, on the beach if possible, or at least wash your hands and feet before you go home. Wash as many swimsuits and towels as possible.

Pay attention to baby 

Make sure babies and toddlers do not eat sand or put their hands in their mouths after touching or playing with it.

Never leave little ones without diapers or swimsuits at the beach. This habit is not hygienic and little girls are at risk of catching vulvitis, a mild infection of the genitals.

Watch out for your pets

While there are no specific rules in this area, many municipalities have adopted decrees prohibiting dogs on beaches, in particular for reasons of hygiene. 

Choose a “Blue Flag” beach

If possible, go to a "blue flag" beach. This label, created in France in 1985, is awarded for the quality of bathing water and the cleanliness of beaches. It takes into account several criteria such as the development of a drinking water point and garbage cans. This year, 186 French municipalities, or 399 beaches, received it.
