 10 essential oils to treat your dog

Treating your dog with essential oils is possible as long as you never apply them pure on the coat, avoid contact with the mucous membranes, do not use them on puppies or pregnant (or lactating) females, and ask the advice of a professional in case of doubt.

•  Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil is a versatile essential oil with both antiseptic, antispasmodic, healing, soothing, repellent (fleas and ticks) and sedative (= relaxing) properties. It is applied by the cutaneous route by being diluted with a vegetable oil massaged on the coat, and more particularly behind the ears in case of stress, such as before a visit to the veterinarian for example.

•  Geranium essential oil

Geranium essential oil has repellent properties, which makes it an essential oil of choice in the prevention of parasites such as ticks and fleas. It diffuses by means of a spray or a pipette on the animal's coat by being diluted with a vegetable oil, ideally Neem vegetable oil, itself renowned for its antiparasitic properties.

•  Chamomile essential oil

Chamomile essential oil is anti-inflammatory and non-toxic. It is indicated in the event of skin irritation, for example in the case of bites of infected fleas, wounds, scratches, bites, etc. It is also known to relieve allergic reactions and burns.

• Tea tree essential oil

The essential oil of tea tree is anti-microbial, antifungal, antiviral, immunostimulant, and antiparasitic. It treats skin infections in dogs of all origins (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic). It is always used diluted and never administered orally.

•  Cinnamon essential oil

Cinnamon essential oil is known to fight against intestinal and digestive disorders in dogs, to strengthen their immune system and to fight internal parasites (worms). It can be applied directly to the skin of the animal (except the mucous membranes) only if it is diluted at least to 2% in a vegetable oil.

•  Ginger essential oil

Ginger essential oil helps digestion, fights dizziness and joint pain. To relieve joint disorders in dogs, pour into a bottle 4 drops of Rosemary essential oil, 2 drops of Lavender essential oil and 3 drops of Ginger essential oil, add 2 tablespoons of argan oil and a pplicate in massage on the painful zones by carrying out light circular movements.

•  Wintergreen essential oil

The essential oil of wintergreen has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-rheumatism properties. It is the ally of older dogs suffering from joint problems. To make a mixture against your dog's rheumatism, mix 20 drops of Odorous Wintergreen essential oil, 15 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil and 10 drops of Scots Pine essential oil in 30 drops of oily macerate of St. John's Wort . Mix well and apply a few drops to the painful areas.

• Ravintsara essential oil

Ravintsara essential oil has antiviral, stimulating and expectorant properties. It fights a large number of viral infections in dogs such as nasopharyngitis, bronchitis and kennel cough. It is not toxic and can be used both internally (while requiring precautions) and externally.  

• Atlas Cedar essential oil

Atlas Cedar essential oil has antiseptic and antiparasitic properties. It is also healing, disinfectant and antifungal. Used to promote regeneration and protection of the skin and hair, it is most often applied through the skin, diluted with shampoo. Dosage: 2 to 3 drops of Cedar Atlas in a dose of shampoo, or 2 teaspoons in 1 l of shampoo.

•  Lemon essential oil

Lemon essential oil has hepatoprotective and sanitizing properties. It also fights against warts by being applied through a cotton swab directly to the wart avoiding the periphery to avoid irritating the skin. Be careful with its use because it is photosensitizing (skin reaction in the event of exposure to the sun).
